A miniature study of a black tail deer. My very first miniature. I used Derwent Watercolor pencils and Prisma color pencils and Lyra color pencils. Reference photos were my own.

The Black-tailed deer is currently common in northern California, western Oregon, Washington, in coastal and interior British Columbia, and north into the Alaskan panhandle.

In Celtic animal lore the deer was said to be a fairy creature that could pass between both worlds. The deer symbolizes kindness, gentleness, patience, sensitivity, graceful beauty, innocence and keen observation. The deer can teach people how to love unconditionally. Because of their well developed senses, the deer can see through illusions and are able to get through difficult and dangerous situations.
